EQUIVALENCE
Spiritual Landscapes of the Western United States
by Kimberly Schneider [Prototype Concept]
I am drawn to desolate land and seascapes of the western United States. For me, making photographs is a meditation of sorts, a search for truth, which I do both with and without cameras. Further, I’ve never been able to keep myself out my photographs and the darkroom is where I learn about the subconscious aspect of my images.
All of my photographs are equivalent images (or subconscious self-portraits). While they are inspired by what is visible to the naked eye, they also about what is not – and the latter is something that that reveals itself in the prints during my unique analog printing processes.
My work has always been about looking beneath the surface of things for what might not be obvious at first glance. Further, making photograms (unique darkroom prints) with sand, ocean water, snow, ice, and more opened my eyes to what a landscape photograph could be as a unique art object.
Inspired by my ongoing Winds of Change series, EQUIVALENCE will be a unique landscape photography book – composed of both film photographs made in select locations of the western United States, as well as unique landscape photograms made with materials collected from those same locations.
