Veritas Editions Sells Second Copy of Limited Edition Book Honoring the Twenty-One California Missions

Sale Will Benefit The Campaign for the Preservation of Mission San Antonio de Padua

Veritas Editions is pleased to announce Susan Gill, President Emerita of The Campaign for the Preservation of Mission San Antonio de Padua Foundation has purchased the second copy of the limited edition book The Spirit Within: The California Missions.  The book will be donated to the foundation and auctioned later this year to raise funds for the earthquake retrofit of Mission San Antonio de Padua, which is currently underway.

The Spirit Within: The California Missions is limited to an edition of fifteen numbered and three lettered copies.  The book honors the twenty-one California missions and their founding father, Junípero Serra, who will be canonized by Pope Francis in September of this year. The volume includes twenty-two tipped-in original platinum/palladium prints and three loose platinum/palladium prints, all printed by photographic artist Craig Alan Huber using archival methods.

Susan Gill commented, “The California Missions are a national treasure and must be preserved for future generations.  I am pleased to donate this inspiring collection.”  Current President of The Campaign for the Preservation of Mission San Antonio de Padua Foundation Al Parolini added, “On behalf of the Board of Directors and supporting members of the Campaign, we thank Craig for his diligent work in producing this masterpiece and Susan Gill for her purchase and donation to this tremendously worthy cause.”

Huber is a Washington state-based photographic artist who started photography around the age of 8.  His work is in permanent collections at The National Steinbeck Center, the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis, Mission San Antonio de Padua, and the Museo de Fray Junípero Serra in Majorca, Spain and is collected by individuals throughout the US, Europe, and Australia.  His work has been seen in solo exhibitions and in numerous group shows at venues including the Carmel Art Institute, and RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco.

Huber first spent time at Mission San Antonio in 2011, in a workshop sponsored by photographic instructor Al Weber.  One of the instructor’s stated goals for the workshop was to ‘further develop you as photographic artists’, which he took to heart.   Inspired by the authentic setting, he produced work that would eventually be included in this book, as well as in the 52 platinum prints contributed to the group portfolios created for participating artists.

Huber will donate 15 percent of all profits from the sale of the 15 copies of this rare book to The Campaign for the Preservation of Mission San Antonio and other California Missions in need of preservation funds.
